Meet Olivia MaroneNorth Carolina Wedding Photographer

Olivia Marone is our newest North Carolina Wedding Photographer! Olivia shared with us a little background about herself, how she got started, her advice for new photographers, and what she loves most about wedding photography:

How did you get started?
I was 16 and got my first SLR camera when a close friend of my family unexpectedly reunited with a former sweetheart while on a business trip. They were married within two weeks, and asked me to be their photographer. Needless to say, I had never shot a wedding before and was terrified. Talk about sink or swim. Thankfully the photos turned out and I learned so much from that first wedding. I was hooked. I continued to shoot weddings throughout college, and after graduating I managed a photo studio for several years before returning to wedding photography.

What’s your photography style?
A blend of traditional and photojournalism. I believe that if I am able to get a couple to look natural in front of the camera, then their photos will be more than a record; they will become treasured memories.

What’s a typical day like for you?
If I’m not shooting, then I start my day by returning emails and phone calls. But most of my time is dedicated to editing photos in Photoshop and Lightroom.

What’s the last workshop or seminar you attended and what did you learn?
The Westcott Top Pro Tour where Bob Davis was the key note speaker. Mr. Davis has photographed celebrity weddings and had lots of advice about using speedlights in difficult conditions where the photographer doesn’t have control over the lighting (e.g. a wedding ceremony at a big cathedral).

Any books or courses you would recommend to new photographers?
Langford’s Advance Photography is a standard place to start. Find a photographer whose work you admire and then study their body of work.

What piece of equipment would you say is most important to you?
A fast lens, by that I mean one that can produce beautiful results in low light situations. I love my 24-70mm F2.8

What do you offer that is special or unique?
Reaching the right customers. There are many brides and grooms out there, and there are almost as many wedding photographers. Everyone is going to have slightly different styles and personalities. I don’t want to convince couples that I’m the perfect photographer for them if I’m not.

What do you love most about your job?
I honestly love being around happy people, and someone’s wedding day is pretty much one of the happiest days of most people’s lives.

Is there anything you would have done differently during your career that could be advice for others?
I would have started my own business sooner. I spent many years working for large studios, where I gained valuable experience, but was restricted to a formulaic list of shots. Working for myself allows me to have fewer clients and thus allows me to customize my services for each couple.

What new and upcoming technologies in photography (camera equipment, editing software, etc) excite you?
Each new edition of Lightroom is always exciting especially since I shoot all of my weddings in RAW.
