One Simple Website Change to Higher Rankings

Title tags are one of the most important factors in optimizing your site for high search engine (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc) rankings. They are actually a quick and easy change you can make to your site that will have a big impact with search engines. The text contained in your title tags are usually used by search engines to appear in search results pages. So optimized title tags can result in better search engine rankings and more click throughs to your site.
WHAT IS A TITLE TAG?

A Title tag is the text that appears on the top left of your web browser. This text explains to search engines what your webpage is about.

This is what the HTML Code for a Title Tag looks like:

<head>

<title>Web Page Title Here</title>

</head>

HOW TO OPTIMIZE YOUR TITLE TAG

Specific keyword phrases should be included in your title tag. Think about the topics and terms you want your webpage to come up for in the search engines when people search. If you are a wedding photographer located in Detroit Michigan, you'll want your site to appear in search engine results for search terms such as "Detroit Michigan Wedding Photographer" and "Michigan Wedding Photographer" or "MI WEdding Photographer". These are the keyword phrases you should include in your title tag. Not only should you use those keywords in your title tag, but it is crucial to use them within the text on that same page. In other words, the title tag should accurately describe exactly what is found in the text on the same page, and each page of your website should have a unique Title Tag, based on the text on that particular page.

Be careful not to repeat or have to many keywords, as this can be viewed as spam to search engines and can negatively effect your site rankings. Limit the length of the title tags to a total of 65 characters or less since search engines will not acknowledge what is beyond 65 characters and they may not show more than 65 characters in the search results.

Some examples of a good title tag would be:

"Detroit Michigan Wedding Photographer - Your Company Name" or "Your Company Name - Wedding Photojournalist in Detroit Michigan"

Placing your company name in the title tag is a good idea to promote your name. Users searching specifically for your name will be able to find you easily, and others searching for a wedding photographer will see your name and become familiar with it.

Example of a title tag to avoid:

"Home Page"

This is too general and if someone found this in search engine results they would not know what the page is about, so they most likely would not click on it.

CONCLUSION

Optimizing your title tags is a simple but crucial step in search engine ranking. If you take the time and follow these basic tips to optimize correctly, you should be well ahead of your competitors.
